The following are trainings offered on topics in forensic science. Indigent Defense Services does not endorse or sponsor any of the trainings listed, unless specifically mentioned.

  • Defending Drug Cases: The Science of Drug Analysis - NCAJ will offer this one-day CLE on the science of drug analysis on Apr. 24, 2015 in Greenville, NC. Topics include the scientfic analysis of various drugs, lab procedures, and how to make problems with scientific analysis relevant to jurors.
  • Digital Forensics: The New DNA - NC Attorneys for Science and Technology are sponsoring a 7.0 hour CLE on May 29, 2015 on computer, cell phone, cell tower, GPS, and audio/video forensics at Campbell Law School in Raleigh. Presenters Larry and Lars Daniel of Guardian Digital Forensics will make these complex topics accessible to attorneys and explain the limitations of these types of evidence.
  • The SANE/Forensic Nurse Evaluation: What does it all mean? On June 5, 2015, Bonnie Price, DPN, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P, AFN-BC and Sara Jennings, MSN, RN, SANE-A, SANE-P, AFN-BC will offer a one-day seminar for attorneys which provides information to assist with interpreting forensic medical records and subsequent testimony of the SANE/Forensic Nurse in sexual assault litigation. The program is in Richmond, VA.
  • NIST will offer Forensic Science Error Management - International Forensics Symposium in Washington, DC on July 20-24, 2015. This program will focus on various types of errors in forensic science, including analyst/expert error, fraud, methods/protocol error, and instrumentation/technology limitations and how to address these errors.

  • Videos from the National Institute of Standards and Technology Forensics@NIST 2012 Symposium are available. The symposium featured three days of presentations and discussions on forensic science topics and ongoing NIST research efforts in these areas: forensic biology and DNA, firearms and toolmark analysis, fire research, trace analysis and collection, computer forensics, fingerprint and biometrics, and multimedia forensics. Below are links to free or low-cost online trainings that are offered by various organizations, including the National Institute of Justice, the National Clearinghouse for Science, Technology & the Law, RTI International, the Forensic Science Initiative, the Women's Information Network, and others. Some organizations require participants to register prior to taking the free course, but the registration process only takes a few minutes. The Forensic Science Initiative courses can be taken for free by public defenders. This database can be sorted by topic.
