Upcoming Forensic Science Trainings

The following are trainings offered on topics in forensic science. Indigent Defense Services does not endorse or sponsor any of the trainings listed, unless specifically mentioned.

  • Western North Carolina Death Investigation Conference - this full-day program is being offered on Mar. 22, 2014 in Winston-Salem. The program is geared toward medical examiners, attorneys, and other death investigation professionals. Topics covered include differentiating between cause, mechanism, and manner of death; assessing when a full autopsy is needed in traffic-related fatalities; interpreting autopsy findings related to traffic-fatility scene reconstruction, and recognizing injuries related to electrocution. This program has been approved for CLE credit.
  • Fluorescence Detection of Blood Impressions with Acid Yellow - RTI International will offer this free online training on Mar. 25, 2014. The course will demonstrate and discuss the process for using acid yellow 7 to visualize blood impressoins on dark surfaces through fluorescence.
  • Emerging Topics and Research in Sexual Assault Investigation - RTI International will offer this free online training on Apr. 11, 2014. This full-day seminar will discuss best practices for photographic documentation of injuries as well as other topics of forensic nursing.
  • Webinar: A Primer for Expert Discovery: What to ask for and why you need it - the National Association for Public Defense is offering this webinar on April 16, 2014 at 1 pm. This program will help prepare attorneys to scrutinize and challenge the conclusions of experts.
  • Understanding Gas Chromatography and Blood Testing - This seminar brings two of the nation's most well-known criminal defense attorneys to North Carolina to teach about gas chromatography on April 25, 2014. This full-day seminar is dedicated to one of the most important issues in forensics today - blood testing. Josh D. Lee and Justin J. McShane, both Assistant Chromatography Instructors for the American Chemical Society, will share their expertise and knowledge and equip attendees with the science and law, so that they may confidently tackle blood evidence in their cases. Registration includes seminar materials on CD and 6.75 CLE Hours.
  • Making Sense of Science VII - NACDL's annual forensic CLE will take place on May 15-18, 2014 in Las Vegas. The program features presentations on expert testimony, ballistics, forensic pathology and toxicology, digital evidence, DNA, and other topics related to legal and scientific aspects of forensic evidence.
  • Neuroscience Boot Camp - The Center for Neuroscience & Society at the University of Pennsylvania will host its annual Neuroscience Boot Camp from July 28 - Aug. 6, 2014. This program is designed for lawyers, educators, economists, and other professionals who are incorporating concepts and methods of neuroscience into their work. Some scholarships for the program are available. The deadline for applications if Jan. 30, 2014.
  • Brains on Trial - this 2-part series on the use of neuroscience evidence in criminal trials which was broadcast during Sept. 2013 on PBS is available for viewing online.
  • Neuroscience and the Law - this March 10, 2014 program on WUNC's The State of Things features Nita Farahany, professor of law, genome sciences & policy and philosophy; Ahmad Hariri, professor of psychology and neuroscience; Walter Sinnott-Armstrong, professor of practical ethics; and Scott Huettel, professor of psychology and neuroscience. A recording of the program is available online.

Materials from Previous Programs

  • Videos from the National Institute of Standards and Technology Forensics@NIST 2012 Symposium are available. The symposium featured three days of presentations and discussions on forensic science topics and ongoing NIST research efforts in these areas: forensic biology and DNA, firearms and toolmark analysis, fire research, trace analysis and collection, computer forensics, fingerprint and biometrics, and multimedia forensics. The program's agenda is posted here.
  • If you missed a training not listed here and would like to access the materials, email Sarah Rackley Olson. Some of the national programs have provided a DVD copy of the program and/or written materials that can be shared.

NC-Specific Online Forensic Science Trainings

Online Forensic Science Trainings

The websites below offer free college-level courses that may be of interest to attorneys, including courses in biology, chemistry and neuroscience:

Below are links to free online trainings that are offered by various organizations, including the National Institute of Justice, the National Clearinghouse for Science, Technology & the Law, RTI International, the Forensic Science Initiative, the Women's Information Network, and others. Some organizations require participants to register prior to taking the free course, but the registration process only takes a few minutes. The Forensic Science Initiative courses can be taken for free by public defenders. This database can be sorted by topic.
